FLY TYING

Weekend Tying Sessions Are Here!  **Pre-registration is required**

Saturdays at the shop ...

Our novice tyer series is here!  Classes include the following.  Check back often for updates and new classes, or follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the latest.

  1. Fly Tying 101 - Saturdays, 10 am - 11 am.  This is a basic course for those without tying experience.  All tools and materials are provided.  Participants will learn the tools and materials used in tying, along with a few basic techniques.  They will tie ~2-3 basic patterns.  This class is free but requires a $20 deposit to hold a seat.  The $20 is returned in store credit after the class.  This series starts on Saturday, Jan 20th.
     

  2. Technique series - Saturdays, 4 - 6 pm.  $40 per class.  10 seats maximum.

    1. Intro to Hackle - Saturday, 1/27.  In this class, participants will learn about the different feathers on a bird skin, the names of different sections of the bird, how they are packaged and sold in different varieties, and what each type of feather is used for.  All tools and materials are provided.  They will tie ~2-3 patterns using different parts of the bird to understand the qualities of various feathers.  Prior to the class, participants should be able to use basic tying tools, tie materials onto a hook, and finish a fly.

    2. Dubbing Deep-dive - Saturday, 2/3.  In this class, participants will learn about the different types of dubbing.  They will learn multiple techniques for applying dubbing, practice making dubbing from a hare’s mask and examine the differences between synthetic and natural, long and short strands, etc.  They will tie ~3-4 flies with different dubbings and techniques to evaluate their appearance, buoyancy, etc.  Prior to the class, participants should be able to use basic tying tools, tie materials onto a hook, and finish a fly.

    3. Thread Class - Saturday, 2/10.  In this class, participants will learn about the different threads available for fly tying, including the various materials used to make threads, different deniers and manufacturers, and the latest innovations in thread and tying technology.  They will also use various tools and bobbins to learn the importance of tension control.  They will tie ~3-4 flies with different threads and bobbins to test materials and practice tension control.  Prior to the class, participants should be able to use basic tying tools, tie materials onto a hook, and finish a fly.

    4. Build Your Fly Box Series - Saturdays, starting 2/17. This 5 class series you'll learn to tie 15 different patterns that are mainstays in seasoned anglers fly boxes for the South Branch of the Raritan. Each class you'll learn 3 patterns, and receive the materials needed to tie a dozen of each pattern for a total of 36 flies/class! By the end of the series, you'll have mastered the local patterns and likely will need a new fly box to hold all 180 flies!

Sundays at the shop...

SBO’s Sunday tying sessions will be intended for intermediate tiers already familiar with the basic tools and techniques. Check back in as we'll continue to add names to the list!

  1. Lou DiGena - Sunday, Feb 18. Come &learn to tie 'KISS' - Keep It Simple, Stupid - patterns with Lou. He's a Pro Staff member for Regal, Solarez, and Ewing Feathers. He'll be teaching to tie his Tiger Baetis Nymph, Rockworm 2.0, Ice PT Jig, Stonefly Creeper and CE Crawfish.​​

  2. Matt Grobert - Sunday, March 10. A true legend in the NJ fly tying community, mentoring and inspiring several generations of fly tyers. 

  3. Tim Flagler - Wednesday, March 13
